Peace Rock – which emerged mysteriously under the cover of night on Memorial Day weekend, 2006 – is a project undertaken by a small group of long-time Ocean Beach residents who wished to carry forward a decades-long tradition of guerilla art installations at what, until now, has always been known locally as Birdshit Rock (or Birdpoop Rock when children are nearby).

Here, the group first pays its sincere respect to all previous installations, including: The Crab; the Christmas Tree; Tiki Man; and, of course, the marvelous Pterodactyl (Pteradon?) that graced the rock for the past year until destroyed during the winter storms.

The sign was designed by a local artisan of translucent glass, to make it “organic” to the surroundings, as if it had sprung from the ocean, part abalone shell, part seaweed, part water, part sky. It was intended to reflect whatever peaceful insights and wishes each viewer projected upon it.

No political statement is intended by the installation. On the contrary, the group specifically wanted to find a sublime way of expressing the One Thing – a hope for peace – that everyone should be able to agree upon in these troubled times.

We hope the community accepts our effort. Indeed, we hope the community embraces it as an inspirational reflection of the unique Ocean Beach/Point Loma/Sunset Cliffs community.

Through the link below, we invite viewers to post whatever peaceful comments – about the Peace sign or anything else – you care to share with the community.

Peace, out.
